More about Birch Grove Nursery

Starting in the Spring of 2024, Birch Grove Nursery sets off to be a premier source of useful and interesting plants for the Upper Midwest. It is my intention to always provide healthy and vigorous plants to customers.

This is a small nursery in Northern Wisconsin featuring species of interest for those involved in native gardening, creating habitat, prairie restoration, silviculture, hunting, homesteading, and tree crops.

Currently, this is a mail order only business, with no physical store. Plants are ready to ship around early June, indicated as “in stock.”

Please keep in mind that most of the species and strains listed here will be cold hardy for Zone 4 in Northern Wisconsin, and should grow well in the broader Midwest region. However, some are marginal and would perform better in warmer areas. Please read descriptions for details. Also, a climate that is technically Zone 4 in Alaska has characteristics that are quite different from a Zone 4 in Wisconsin. A Zone 5 in the Upper Peninsula is quite different from a Zone 5 in the Black Hills, a Zone 8 climate in Oregon is quite different from a Zone 8 in Florida, Etc. Hardiness Zones only describe the lowest typical winter temperature. This is an important consideration, however, there are many additional factors that support or inhibit the growth of plants. These include; precipitation patterns, summer day and night temperatures, elevation, humidity, growing season (period between last spring frost and first fall frost), growing degree days, snow depth-which tends to decrease frost depth, and sunshine hours in the winter and summer. Beyond regional climate considerations, there are soil quality considerations, local diseases, insects, wildlife damage, and grower care, etc. Therefore I can only guarantee you a high quality plant. How plants survive under your care and in your environment is not guaranteed by Birch Grove Nursery.

The majority of the plants sold are several months old. Even though they are small they tend to readjust better than older potted plants, and are much more affordable for the grower. I have personally seen thriving three year old trees that are comparable in size to ten or twenty year old trees, of the same species, that were planted in different conditions. Getting your perennials set up for success in the beginning makes the difference in the long term!

Plants are shipped as actively growing in small pots. This reduces certain possible risks during shipment that bare root plants may experience. The plants will arrive green and ready to plant immediately, and must be watered thoroughly upon planting. If you cannot plant immediately, set them in a larger plant pot or ice cream pail with holes in the bottom, which can be filled quickly to completely soak the roots, then drain out. Keeping them under partial tree shade, out of intense sun will decrease stress till they are planted.
