Bluebeech, also known as American Hornbeam or Musclewood, is a very attractive small tree. Ideal for planting close to a house, as it will not get massive. A very underutilized native, Bluebeech has tight, pale bark, small semiglossy leaves, retains leaves into winter, and has interesting winged seeds that stay attached into early winter. Tends to stay under 15 feet in height and trunk rarely gets more than 6” in diameter. Wood is very hard with poor rot resistance. Natural habitat is similar to hazel; open woodlands, not too much sun or shade. Soil should be fertile and well draining.
